The shops were ail gaily decorated for the occasion, very noticeable among them being the always energetic him of Aniesbury Bros, with their splendid array of Chinese 'fainter us and evergreens, and they had "- a constant stream of purchasers, ail bent on making their small bargains from Santa Glaus tor the juveniles. The special attraction of the toy display, always provided by that firm at Christmas time, was, as usual, in the capable hands of Mrs Beattie and left nothing to be desired* The. firm baa recently been under new management, and Mx Carrutherg (the manager) is to be congratulated on the success ol the firm. iAt the Church of St. Simon and St. Jude, a service was held on Christmas night, the church being most beautifully decorated for the occasion by a band of willing workers, whose efforts were repaid by the appearance of the interior. I'he preacher was the vicar, the Rev. H. Wilson, and the church was crowded. Special chants and carols were rendered byy a strong choir, the solos being taken by Mesdames Pye, Sandercock, and lieattie, Misses Burgess and Dafter, and Mr pye. The carols were repeated on Sunday. It is proposed to hold a parishioners' picnic to the beach on ixew Years' Day.
