The prisoners were admitted to bail, pending an appeal. President Roosevelt initiated the investigation regarding the Pittsburg scandals. ._ The investigator of the affairs of the German National Bank, discovered, that 17,500 dollars (£3500) had been paid to members of the council's finance committee to secure the transference of the city's deposits. Renter's Pittsburg correspondent states that six of the councillors wanted have disappeared. The chief detective, for warning them, lias been dismissed. Witnesses testified that 60 councillors were bribed with 45,000 dollars to secure. ;bhe authorisation of a filtration plant. One^witness swore that a councillor hinted to him that there were only six members who could npt be bribed. One councillor, by a ruse, received a bribe in ; an. hotel in connection with wood-paving, and a flash-light photograph was 1 taken showing him in the act of receiving the bribe. The Supreme Court of Missouri has ousted the Standard Oil and subsidiary companies from the State, and dissolved the Waters Pierce Oil Company of St. Louis. The Court fined each conipany 50,000 dol!a.rs (£10,000).
