OPENING DAY. I (From Our Special Reporter.) [. The carnival of the Manawatu Rac- \ ing Club opened to-day, when the _• first programme of the three d_ys' I meeting was begun in overcast weaL ther. There were representative | * sporting men present from all parts of the dominion. The Awapuni ; course was looking at its best, and the track was in good oondition. It i is expected that the meeting will be : ; marked by some of the best racing _ seen in the island, not even except- \- ing that of the second day of the J- Feilding meeting— which is a pretty ■ big expectation. \ The first event of the meeting was t the— \ Highdeil Hack Hurdles Handicap, 1 of 100 soys., second horse 20. third 10 soys. One mile and a naif, 6 ; hurdles. D'Nil 1, Commander 2, Coy 3. Only Don Carlos was scratch- ' cd. The running was made by D'Nil, Commander, and Coy, and the first- ? named won rather easily, with a r :- clear two lengths s_)ace from Ckunf mander, Coy running into third [ place.
