POHANGINA COUNTY COUNCIL

• The ordinary monthly meeting of the-Pohangina County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Crs. R. W. Brown' (in the chair), D. Howie, G. I<\ Smith, H. Burne, C. Bailey, B. C. Eglinton, A. A. Wagstaff. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were received:— From seven Councillors, asking for extension of time to pay rates. Cr. Howi© reported being interviewed by a number of ratepayers who had been unfortunate with bush fires last year. It was decided to take 110 action before next meeting. From it. S. Rounthwaite, Consulting Engineer, asking for expenses in connection with visits to Pohangina bridge, amounting to £13 17s lid; also asking for particulars of timber and ironwork delivered at the bridge contract. — Cheque to be forwarded and the matter of the information re the timber was left to the Engineer, From Superintendent of Electric Lines, forwarding statement of expenditure and revenue of the Komako and Ngaputohi telephone offices, showing a deficiency of £5 17s, and asking for amount. From District Road Engineer, stating that there was no necessity for forwarding plans and specifications of the proposed work at the Pohangina bridge for approval, provided they were carried out according to the scheme suggested by Mr Hursthouse, and under Mr Harland's supervision. TREASURER'S REPORT. The Treasurer reported as follows ; — General fund, dr. £2426 15s 3d; loans account, cr. £623 19s Id. Riding accounts: Awahou, dr. £135 Is 8d; Coal creek, dr. £352 3s 7d; Mangaone, dr. £295 6s 6d; Mangapikopiko, dr. £392 13s 3d j Pohangina, dr. £211 13s Od; Tamaki, dr. £338 11s Id; Umutoi, dr. £1290 14s 9d. General rates amounting to £2712 15s 7d have been received. Accounts amounting to £955 6s were passed for payment. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer (Mr Harland) reported as follows: — Awahou riding. — Three thousand feet of timber have been delivered for the decking on Lynch bridge ; general maintenance has been carried out satisfactorily ; eleven men are at work on the Pohangina bridge site, and weather permitting, the bridge should be- open for traffic in a fortnight. Coal Creek. — The Council's teams are at work repairing the Main Ridge Road with metal. Mangaone. — A new culvert was required at the Ashhursi Main Road at the top of the Horseshoe bend; the formation of Finnis track is being carried out satisfactorily. There was nothing of importance to report in the Mangapikopiko and Pohangina ridings. Tamaki. — The outside drain, on the Delaware flat is being attended to. Umutoi. — Weather permitting Blixt and Gardiner's contract should be completed by the end of the month. No agreement has been come to with Messrs Pollard and Phelan in regard to Piri Piri crossing. In conclusion the Engineer pointed out that Banks and Co. had not forwarded their promised £25 towards metalling the Table Flat road, and as yet he had been unable to col. lect any timber or waggon tax. GENERAL. | The following motions were carried : — To call fresh tenders for Contract 143, the tenders put in being too high. Tenders for the right to cut grassseed on county roads to be considered at next meeting. The clerk to write to Banks and Co., of Apiti, requesting payment of £25 subsidy as soon as possible. The Council placed on record an expression of sympathy with the chairman in his recent bereavement. Immediate action #to be taken against persons allowing their entire animals to stray on the County roads. The County offices to be closed from December 24 to January 6, inclusive. Applications to be called for a dog tax collector, to be in by next meeting; tax for all dogs to be 2s 6d; tenders also to be called for supplyof dog collars. R. A. Cheyne was granted a lease of Piri Piri reserve for seven years at £1 per annum, th© same to be fenced at once, and the Council to have the right to graze the teams thereon.
