A NEW ZEALAND VIOLINIST AT HOME.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) London, May 18. Miss Vera French, who gave a concert witli' a contingent of the London ' Symphony Orchestra, waa born in , Auckland, New Zealand, but educat- ( ed ,1n England. Her exceptional - musical gifts were "discovered" by Mr , George Menges, with whom she stu- ] died lor five years afterwards, hay- < ing some lessons from Professor Sev- ] cik, and subsequently of Mar Same- < tini. Not being yet out of her teens, Miss trench can scarcely claim to bo a mature violinist ; bzut in her playing in the Concertos in E-flat, by Mozart, and in F-sharp minor, by Vieiixtemps, were shown a brilliancy of technique, a musical perception, and sensitiveness of feeling .that were very pleasure giving. Above all, there was a youthful freshness and sincerity in her interpretations which 'inparted individuality that held attention. This was specially noticable in her performance of Ysaye's poetical l'ttle piece "La Reve dun Enfant," which waa given with fascinating delicacy. Miss French's forthcoming j recital at Beohstein Hall should prove very enjoyable. |
