Last night Mayor (Pastor) Ries addressed the burgesses on the recent judgment of the Supreme Court in which a mandamus was granted, at the instance of the Council to compel him to put certain motions in the borough council. By a large majority those present declined to support a proposal from the Pastor to take the case to the Court of Appeal. THE S.S. MANAKAU. " New Plymouth, July 1. While towing a barge load of tallow to the steamer Wakanui, lying off Waitara, the s.s. Manakau grounded on the bar this morning. The barge broke loose and lies high and dry on the beach. The Manakau got off and steamed back to the wharf. A man named Haseler was riding into the surf to help the crew of the barge ashore, when his horse reared and fell, breaking Haseler's leg. IN DIVORCE. # In the Divorce Court this morning, Judge Edwards granted decrees nisi in the cases of Margaret Trask v. Elijah Trask; Hugh Fraser McDonald v. A. M. McDonald, and C. Christie (co-respondent) and Charles tfewman Smith v. Lydia Smith, and James Franks (co-respondent). DEATH OF WORKS INSPECTOR. Lyttelton, July 1. Samuel Delbridge, Inspector of Works for the Lyttelton Harbour Board since their formation, died this morning in his 67th year. Hei was highly respected as a prominent member of the Church of England, Freemason and Oddfellows' Lodges, and one of the founders of the Lyttelton fire brigade. He leaves a widow and a grown up family consisting of three daughters and four sons.
