The Feilding Star. Oroua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette. FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 1908. For Old Settlers.

In -an editorial note in tho Star the other evening we expressed some surprise that an- old-settled district like Wellington generally and Feilding especially did not have such an institution as an O'd Settlers' Association. We are now informed that ; the suggestion is bearing fruit, and that a movement is likely to he set on foot having for its object the formation of such an association with its headquarters in Feilding. We are ' pleased to hear of this, and will ue glad to kehp the movement along with any friendly help and assistance that can be rendered by the Star. We undertand that Mr John Lintou has the matter in hand, and it is hoped that this reference to the movement will give an impetus by causing the many old identities in and* around Feilding to discuss the matter amongst themselves, so that when the call comes they may be prepared to act in unity in the formation of an Old Settlers' Association. Such in- ' stitutions have beon successfully formed in Canterbury and Otago, and in the latter province its Old Settlers' Association took no small part in the celebrations the other day connected with the sixtieth anniversary of the ! province. AYe understand that there 1 are not a few of the first settlers of I the Manchester Block still residing in : and about Feilding, and the reunion ' of such old identities would be the ! very best thing for organising a j regular gathering under the auspices |of the Association. The question j for consideration would be as to what districts should be included in the I scope of membership. Mr R. B. McKenzie, of Carnarvon, whose late : father (Mr T. U. McKenzie) was one l of the first to arrive in this disI trict, hopes that tho sphere of operaj tion for membership will run down to j his district; and he suggested, in a j conversation with us yesterday, that ! a twenty-mile radius around Feildj ing would make a useful district for J the association. These and other matters will be subjects for discussion and decision, of course, for the promoters first and afterwards for the . association should the movement for its organisation bo successful.
