1 ; THE THROUGH EXPRESb. ■ ♦ FEILDING AS A STOPPING PLACE. ' DEPUTATION TO WAIT ON THE MINISTER. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held last night in the • Library to again discuss the proposal to place before the Government the '. necessity of making Feilding a stop- • ping place for the through express : from Auckland to Wellington ■and vice serva. There were present ' Messrs John Cobbe, E. Goodbehere, A. G. Carty. Aylmer, G. Spence, and S. W. Fitzherbert (secretary). In the \ absence of the President and vice- \ presidents, Mr E. Goodbehere was '• voted to tho chair. The Secretary read a wire from Mr F. Y. Lethbridge, M.P. for Oroua, who was in Wellington, as i follows: "The Minister informs me that the time-tablo is not yet fixed. The Department is at work on it." On the motion of Messrs Carty and Cobbo, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Lethbridge. The Chairman stated that it was his opinion that, although the Department was at work on the timetable, it was practically arranged, and they should set to work at once to make sure that the trains . were to stop at Feilding. Mr Carty, in regretting that they had lost a week on the matter, said they should get to work at once, and he was going to move that a committee be set up to arrange for a deputation, supported by all the local bodies interested' and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and armed with all the available statistics, wait on the Minister as soon as possible. He then 'proposed that a Committee, consisting of the President and Messrs Goodbehere and Cobbe, be set up to arrange with representatives of the Oroua, Manawatu, Kiwitea. and Pohangina County Councils, the A. and P. Association, Farmers' Unions, to work up the deputation to the Government. . f .-,«,, On the suggestion of Mr Goodbehere, Mr Carty's name was added to the Committee. 'Seconded by Mr Spence. The Chairman strongly supported the proposition. He was in favour of a deputation, which always carried great weight, but thought a petition would not be so effective. They could do a great deal with a map snowing the large district which drained into Feilding. It seemed ridiculous to him that the people of New Zealand should be taxed for this line, and an important district like Feilding left out. The motion was carried unanimously. ■ . ■ Mr Carty then proposed that it be a recommendation to the Committee to apply at once to the Chairman of each local body, etc., asking for assistance to the deputation. Seconded by Mr Spence, and carn©Q Mr Carty proposed that the Wellington Chamber of Commerce be applied to for support, and asked to Appoint a representative to the proposed deputation. Seconded by Mr Cobbe, and carried. The President (Mr A. H. Atkinson) was appointed convener or the Committee, and the meeting closed with & vote of thanks to the Chairman.
