IN SOUTH CANTERBURY.

During last week the South Canterbury wheat and oats remained firm, despite the lower prices cabled from London. The offering was on a very limited scale; the yields were turning out so disappointing that it made the farmers stand out for top money. The result was that there were only a very few samples oi either wheat or oats on the market at any price. Wheat was quoted at 4s 3d to 4s 4d on trucks, without any business resulting. Farmers were asking 4s 6d. Oats were not offering in any quantities, and prices remained firm with little business passing. Sheaf chaff was in demand, but farmers' reserves were above prices obtainable meantime. Potatoes were showing blight rather badly, and the few dug were yielding poorly. The crop would only be a three or four ton one if the tubers were not spoiled with the blight. Clover seeds were not yet on the market, but # there would be a very small crop this year owing to the dry summer.
