A telegram from Tairua states that a messenger from Ohui Has just ridden over and reported that the scow Surprise went ashore on the rocks about a mile from the north end of Ohui beach and is a total wreck. The captain, mate and two seamen are supposed to be drowned. A fifth hand got ashore and found his way to Ohui, where he is being well looked after by Mr Jas. McGregor. He is badly knocked about and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two. His name is Harry Jackson. From what can be gathered from his account the scow dragged her anchors right from Slipper Island and went ashore on the coast early on Sunday morning. A SCHOONER ASHORE. A telegram from Mangonui reports that the schooner Isabel dv Frame was beached on Saturday between Ahiapara and Reef Point. All hands are safe, and the vessel is in a fair position if the weather keeps fine. SLAUGHTERMEN'S FEDERATION Dunedin, July 23. It is understood that a proposal is on foot for the federation or the slaughtermen's unions of New Zealand. TARIFF CHANGES. Masterton, July 23. The Borough Council to-night discussed the increased duty on iron pipes of greater diameter than five inches. The duty on this class of pipes has been increased from 5 per cent, to 20 per oent. This was considered a very serious matter for local bodies when carrying out gas. water, and drainage work. A motion was carried entering an_emphatic protest against the increased duty. It was also decided to seek the co-operation of all local bodies in the Colony in protesting, and to forward the resolution to the member for the district.
