MANAWATU RUGBY UNION.

The weekly meeting of the Manawatu Rugby Union was held yesterday afternoon, Mr A. N. Gibbons it. the chair. It was decided to play- Horowhenu-. representatives at Levin on Augu.t 14. Mr J. Stalker (Kia Toa) was appointed captain of tbo Union's representative team against Wknganui o i Saturday next. Mr K. Armstrong was appointed manager of the -earn to visit Wairarapa on Wednesday next to meet tho representatives of that district the day following.

Wcu-gaaui, to be played nt Paimerston on Saturday, will commence at 2.30 p.m. The Rugby Union have capped the farcical selection of a rep. team by appointing the greatest shirker in the team as captain. Although they had the best man in the district available, they chose a man whose unsportsmanlike conduct on the field a fortnight ago drew from one of the selectors the remark that if he had been referee. he would have ordered him off the field. Of ..course, it is sometimes advisable to chose as a leader a roan who is fond of the: sound of his own voice when -he is not captain, who is skilful in the art of conducting a retreat (for himself), and who is frequently taken with that tired feeling which involves a disinclination for hard work; but it is never considered policy to show your hand so plainly, and to admit defeat before the game is played. It appears that the Manawatn Union's Management Committee, without making any arrangements at all, seriously expect rep. players living fourteen or fifteen miles from Paimerston to go there for two NIGHTS this week for practice for the rep. match on Saturday 1 Why, in the name of goodness, they do not arrange for a day practice no one can understand. Surely, employers would be only toojglad to give those selected an opportunity for practice if some arrangements were made?.
