LIBEL OF SOAP TRUST.

Lever, head of the firm of Lever Bros., instituted a prosecution against the Daily Mail and the Evening News for libel in connection with the Soap Trust. He declares that the attacks on the Trust have cost' him £40,000 on sales alone, while £2,000,000 worth of £10 preference scares of the firm declined to £1 each, besides other losses on ordinary shares and as regards goodwill. Later. The Daily Mail and Mirror withdrew their imputations against Mr Lever, and the actions were settled on payment of £50,000 damages. Mr Rufus Isaacs, counsel for the newspapers, announced that in view of Mr Lever's demeanour in the wit-ness-box, he would withdraw the plea of justification. - Mr Justice Lawxenoe commended I that as ah honorable and proper ' course. #*■ I The damages awarded are exolu- ' sive of taxed oosts. |
