PALMERSTON FIRE BOARD

The first meeting of the Palmerston North Fire Board was held in the Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon. Present — Messrs F. Allen, C. A. Ewen, and R. M. Simpson, representing the Underwriters' Association ; Mr Alex. Turner, Government nominee; and his Worship the Mayor, Mr R. Essex, and Councillors E. J. Armstrong, and H. Haydon, representing the Borough Council. His Worship the Mayor was duly elected as Chairman, and presided over the meeting. The various clauses of the Act were considered, and an estimate was framed for the requirements of the Board to be forwarded to the Government. It was resolved that the Fire Board take over control as from July Ist ; that the present superintendent, Mr A. Tingey, and the lieutenant, Mr W. Barnard, of the Brigade, be offered the positions of superintendent and Jep.itj-superintendent as provided for in the Act; and the Chairman be authorised to enrol the present members of the Brigade as members of the Fire Brigade under the control of the Fire Board. The Chairman was also authorised to appoint the Palmerston North Fire Police and Salvage Corps, as provided in the Act, to be the Fire Police and Salvage Corps under the Board. Mr W. Hunter, secretary to the Fire Brigade was appointed as secretary to the Fire Board. A further meeting will be held before the end of the present month to make more definite arrangements for carrying out the provisions of the Act.
