[PBB PBBBB ASSOCIATION.] I Dunedin, June 11. i Iv the oase of John Hodson, mino manager, charged with failing to con- , tribute five shillings a week towards the support ot Elizabeth Hodson, his wife, defendant said he just got work at 12s per day after serving a third term of imprisonment for failing to obey a maintenance order for his wife's support. He would not give a shilling to support a woman who liad carried on as his wife had done, not even if it would mean the scaffold to-morrow. The Magistrate sentenced Hodson to three months' imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be withheld till the July pay day in order to give the accused the opportunity of paying off the arrears due. At the .inquest touching the death ot the infant child of G. P. Campbell, Dr. Evans gave, as the result of a post mortem, the opinion that death was due to suffocation, probably caused through the child sleeping in the same bed with the mother. The jury returned a verdict of death by suffocation, the evidence being insufficient to show how caused. The late Dr. Alexander, under his will, bequeathed £1250 to the Governor of St. Helena for the benefit of native born poor and the necossitcus inhabitants of the island. The legacy is given in recognition of the fact that St. Helena was his birthplace, and his family have been closely connected with it for a lengthy period Auckland, Jcne 11. Two young men Chas. The inquest on Alice Caroline Simpson, a young married woman who died suddenly about three weeks ago, was resumed yesterday, when the report of the Colonial Analyst on the contents of her stomach was available. An engine-driver named Douglas Young, while engaged last night with his engine running trucks down to the railway yards near Colombostreet, ran diagonally into three tnicks standing upon an adjacent siding. The engine just failed to clear the trucks, and Young jumped off the engine and was crushed between it and the stationary trucks. Young was badly crushed in the chest, and was dead when picked up. He was a married man with one child. Eketahuna, June 12. The Eketahuna Poultry Association's sixth annual Show' onened today under favourable conditions. Although the entries show a slight falling off on last year ,the exhibits are of a highvclass. Principal winners in leading classes were: — Plymouth Rocks, Jens Thomasen; Black Orpingtons, A. S. Guthrie; Buff Orpingtons, B. C. MeCormick; White Wyandottes, R. G. Vile, W. A. Boyes, Ohas. J. Hansard; Golden Wyandottes, Foster and Hickling, T. A. Boyes, Jas. Brown. Champion for Golden Wyandottes was allotted to a Golden cock exhibited by Foster and Hicking, of Pahiatua. Auckland, June 12. Benjamin Rowsell, a man about 40 years of age, committed suicide last night. He was a medical man, and held in high esteem by a large circle of friends, to whom his tragic death caused a great shock. He had been travelling in the South Island, more especially with a view to studying elephantiasis. Ho had been in Auckland for the past eighteen months, and was especially wellknown as secretary to the St. George's Rowing Club. The proprietor of the Commercial Hotel with % whom Dr. Rowsell had been staying, received a letter this morning stating that his body would be found either in St. Stephens' Cemetery, Parnell, or at ~ the Orakei, and asking the proprietor to communicate with the police. Dr. Rowsell's body was found in the Parnell cemetery. Blenheim, June 12. In the Supreme Court to-day John Moore, alias George Johnstone, was sentenced to twelve months' for the theft of money from lodgers at ' the Cotterill Hotel on May 10. Greymouth. June 12. News from the New Alpine Mine is very encouraging. Yesterday a telegram was received from the superintendent as follows; "Inolined winze opening out on coarse gold; more quarts making in face of level; cariying little fine gold." Wanganui, June 12.
