APITI.

(Our Own Correspondent.) I must congratulate you, Mr Editor, on the promptness and thoroughnee of the report taken bv your repiesentative at our Horticultural Show, and which we were able to peruse the day following the show. This, I believe, you may claim as a record of its kind. Indeed, it has been almost impossible on former occasions to get a repoTt in at all. At a farmers' union meeting on Saturday night, Mr Guy was appointed to represent this district ae deleEate at the Farmers' Conference at evin. At an indignation meeting with Mr Guy as Chairman, re the article which appeared in a contemporary of 2isc instant, reflecting on the residents, Mr Bennett was appointed to write to the editor for an explanation. As far as I can gather, the late show was a financial success, although the weather interfered with those who wished to bring exhibits. Mr Hamilton Elliott's little boy, who broke his arm a short time ago, is progressing favourably under Dr. Gregory's care. At the last Domain Board meeting, a vote of thanks was passed to all who helped with the ploughing and clearing of the ground, and also to all those who helped with the refreshments, etc. It was decided to apply for the balance of the grant from the Government. A few nights since the township was livened up with the lovely music of a kerosene tin band, the occasion being the return of Mr and Mrs J. Kearney from their honeymoon at Nelson. We had a sharp fall of snow on Saturday night, the heaviest since the year 1905, but it was all melted by 1 o'clock next day. The fall of snow reported a week ago did not take place in Apiti, but was on the higher oountry nearer the hills. Mr Guy has bought out Mr A. Brown's interest in his farm. At the indignation meeting; one burly resident said he would like to have the job of roUing in the mud the author of that aggravating paragraph. He looked as if he could and would have done it, too, if the unknown person had been present. Another subscriber of the paper in questino said if a satisfactory explanation was not forthcoming, it would make a difference to tlie number of subscribers in this district at least. At the Farmers' Union meeting, Mr Guy explained that he had been corresponding with the Government re the new Post Office, and an additional sum of £300 was piomised to be put on the estimates. _Jt was found that the original grarflDf £200 which was available, was n<^py auy means enough, but it is estimated that £500 will put up a buUding fit for the requirements of the district. RUAHINE. * .Our Own Correspondent.) Since last I wrote winter has come upon us in no uncertain manner, and during the last fortnight we have had weather to suit all — severe frosts, abundance of rain, hail storms, thunder storms, and gales of wind. Even as I write, the district lies under its mantle of snow, and the rivers are aU in flood. Except for the closing of the school, and hoisting the flag, Empire Day was not recognised in this district. Quite a number of local residents are anticipating a trip to the A. and P. Show. Afangoments for the Bachelors' Ball are well in hand, and from all accounts the ball will be a great success. The football season has not opened favourably. The rough weather has prevented Saturday play, and it is doubtful if we shall be able to get a t«am together at all. as there is some hitch in the club affairs: I should be pleased if any of your correspondents could inform me if Te Aute and Wanganui Colleges play on the Showground during show week A really good football match draws a crowd of people who would not go otherwise, and I should very much like to see a good representative match made an annual fixture.
