CHILDREN'S COMPETITION.

Over 1000 entries were received for the school competitions at the Wanganui Horticultural Show yesterday. In addition to the local schools, entiies were received from Mosstown, Westmere, Turakina, Wangaehu, and Rangiwahia. Flowers were the predominating feature, but the three exhibits of vegetables were distinctly creditable, especially that from the Mosstown School, which comprised o^er twelve varieties. There were 67 exhibits of baskets of flowers, and these, taken altogether, were very creditable. In bouquets there were 63 entries, and these also were excellent. There were 56 ladies spiays, which were all capital pieces of work. Buttonholes were the most numerous, there being no less than 241 entries. These, almost without exception, were excellently made, and the judge had no easy task in allotting the prizes. Pot plants numbered 19, and there were large collections of annuals and perennials. There was an excellent display of indoor school work. .This included 132 entries of handwriting. Iliere was also brushwork, drawing, etc., also a fine exhibit of hobbies, in which collections of stamps formed a j.iominent feature. When the show opened the President announced the result of the school gardens competition. The gardens of the D.H.S., Queen's Park, Sc. John's, Wangaehu, Kaitoke, Vest-mere, Kimbolton, and Mosstown schools were entered, and th-; fiist prize was awarded to the Mosstown school.
