Messrs Abraham and Williams report : — At Palmerston on Thursday we had a very large yarding of cattle, every pen and race being occupied. Bidding was not as brisk as last week, and a number of lines were passed in at auction, but in most cases sales were effected afterwards, and very little went out unsold. Sheep were keenly sought after, and bidding was biisk, every lot being disposed of the hammer. Quotations: — Aged ewes and lambs 22s 6d and 22s 8d ; hoggets 17th Id, 2-th 10s 7d, lis 3d, 12s 4d, 12s lOd and 13s 6d; 2 and 4-th wethers 14s 8d; 2 and 2^-yr steers £2 6s 6d to £2 13s 6d; heifers, in calf, £2 10s to £3 2s 6d, empty, 2-yr, heifers, £2 to £2 3s, 18-tnos heifers 36s to 395; fat cows £4 to £6 9s 6d ; mixed yearlings 30s 6d to 345; yearling steers 36s to £2 Is; yearling heifers 20s 6d to 255; low conditioned yearlings 17s to 20s; cows and calves £2 5s to £3 2s, springing cows £4 17s 6d to £6 12s .Gel. The quality of the cattle yarded was- good, , and competition at times animated. The yarding was close ""oa-^OQ head, I and only three lines were turned out unsold. The supply of steers was . not equal to the demand. All lines of this class met with keen competition.' Taken all round the sale of of cattle was the most satisfactory we have had this season. Cattle: Fat cows £4 5s to £6, store cows £2 to £3, empty ewes 36s to 50s, yearlings steers 32s tn £2 ss, yearling heifers 25s 6d to 325, yearling (mixed sexes) best £2 Gs, others 25s to 3os, weaners 17s to 325, 2-yr steers £3 to £4 5s for best, others 50s to 56s 6d, 3-yr steers (large yarding) £3 15s to £4 19s, bullocks in good order £5 Is to £5 10s. Pigs: Slips 14s. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., held their weekly sale on Thursday, 29th inst. We had a very good yarding of cattle, including a line of 110 3&-yr polled Angus cross steers, which sold well under the hammer, realising £6 4s 6d. Other lines all sold well with spirited bidding. We quote: — 3$ to 4-yr bullocks £6 3s to £6 4s sd, 3 to 3*-yr steers £4 12s forward cows £2 10s to £3, springing cows £3 14s cows and calves £3> mixed yearlings £1 13s. FEILDING WOOL, SKIN AND HIDE SALE. A. H. Atkinson. and Co. report: — We held our monthly sale v on Thursday, and offered a' good catalogue comprising 60 bales and ; 300 bag lots of wool, 1500 skins, 1100 hides and calf skins, 8 casks and 70 tin lots of tallow, and- the usual quantities of horsehair, bones, horns, etc. There was a good attendance of buyers, and keen competition right through, resulting in a very successful sale. The fleece wool offered was mostly medium to coarse crossbred, and values were at l^d above last sale. Dead and other classes also showed an advance. Skins were in* good demand, good classes rising from to Id. With the exception of butchers' hides, the quality of hides offered was below the average, the majority being damaged. All geod, well saved hides sold out at equal to 6£d per lb, with occasional lots up to 6^d. Calf sold equal to. 6id to 7d per lb. Tallow made a further rise of 25s per ton for butchers' lots, and lots in tins rose 25 per cent., making up to 24s cwt. All other lines sold well.
