RETURN OF W. M. HANNAY.

-♦. — . BRITISH AND AMERICAN RAILWAYS. [By Telegraph.] (Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, November 22. Mr W. M. Hannay, formerly in the Government Railway service, and, of recent years. General Manager of the Manawatu Railway Coy., returned to Wellington this morning from a holiday trip abroad. He travelled via America, and his experience led him to think that the American Grand Trunk line, and the Canadian Pacific line were as good as the best of British Railways. In the C.P.R. workshops at -Montreal, they turn out one engine per week and over 14,000 waggons a year. Tough he speaks highly of the American railways in most respects, he says he saw nothing to equal the best English lines, and the splendid way they coped with a large traffic by rapid transit. Like Mr Fulton, Mr Hannays says the motor-bus has come to stay, though the cost of construction and its adaptability to bad roads are matters that have not yet been finally solved. The motor-bus is being largely used as feeders to tram and train, and in the scenic districts some of the Railway Coys, are using them for excursions in cases where it would not pay to run excursions by rail. The bad condition of most of the New Zealand roads will, Mr Hannay says, have to be considered in any attempts made to develop a motor-bus traffic. During his travels abroad Mr Hannay studied the question of the electrification of railways. The system has not been adopted to any extent yet in Great Britain though there are possibilities in the future It ''s, he thinks, pxemature for New Zealand to adopt the system finally. Mr Hannay says New Zealand employees are superior in every respect to those in the Mother Country. ™" — — —
