The Feilding Star. Oroua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette SATURDAY, JULY 14, 1906. The Westland Election.

Thr return of Mr T. Y. Seddon for the Westland seat was looked upon by most people as a foregone conclusion, and as the unexpected did not happen, the second son of tho lalo Premier will sit in his father's place. So far as general politics are concerned, it made little difference in the state of parties, for Mr Michel would havej been, if anything, a more whole-souled supporter of the coming Premier than the successful candidate. For his own sake, we regret that Mr, Seddon has chosen the present occasion to enter politics, but as he has reached his majority no one has a right to complain at the manner in which he has j exercised his judgment in the matter. The most regrettable feature in the contest is the telegram sent by the mother of the candidate to the Rev. W. J. Elliott, first asking his political assistance, and subsequently wiring to him in terms that seem strange coming from anyone situated as the widow of the late Premier is. Wo doubt very much whether the telegrams were written at all by Mrs Seddon, or even that she ever saw them — for they looked very much more like the composition of some ill-advised friend of family who hart little regard for the proprieties. The majority is nothing like as large as most folk thought would have been the case, and, the capital show made by Mr Michel, under the very worst conditions is a very good evidence that he would have won the seat in the ordinary course of events.
