He seemed to recover after the use of a stomach pump, but later at the hospital his condition became critical. The Canterbury Philosophical Institute has decided to establish a Hutton Memorial Research Fund, in honor of the memory of the late Captain Hutton. The fund is to be devoted to the en- \ cpuragement of original research in natural science in New Zealand. Booth presiding, it was decided that letters be sent to the schools in the adjacent district stating that if more schools do not compete for the Shield the qom petition will be abandoned for ever. It was also decided to have a Highland dance competition for boys up to 16* years ; Messrs Short and Barry having promised trophies for this event. By an Order-in-Council justgazetted, it is expressly provided that stamps must be placed on the front or address side of a letter, in the right hand upper corner, stamps placed on the back of a letter will not be recognised, and the letter will be surcharged as insufficiently paid. The Order-in-Council also states that on re-directed letters care should be taken not to place fresh stamps over the stamps which have beep, previously used. The Citizens Life Insurance Co., Ltd., has taken up the whole of the Water Loan of £7000 required by the Feilding Borough Council to complete the water scheme. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. advertise a sale of the late Dr Hughes property, in Manchester Street, to take place on Tuesday, 19th instant. The Government has instructed the Land Purchase Board to enter into negotiations for the purchase of tbe Lagmhor Estate, Ashburton, comprising about 20,000 acres and coming up to within two miles of the town. Full particulars will be advertised on Monday. A farmer near Timaru has on his farm a wild duck that has built its nest in a willow tree some six feet from the ground. The bird is now sitting, and the nest will be watched with some interest to see how the bird will conduct her young to the ground. At the Ashburton Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr Wray, S.M., presiding, Richard Nealon was charged on six informations with selling liquor in a Nolicense district. A conviction was entered on the first information and also on the second. Afterwards the prosecution withdrew the others. In commenting on the amount of false swearing which was associated with sly-grog cases, the Magistrate said, that owing to the difficulty in detecting such offences, a penalty must be inflicted, as the accused had been once previously convicted for a similar offence. He had no option but to send him to gaol, and would sentence accused to two months' imprisonment on each conviction ; the sentences to run concurrently. The accused's counsel said he intended to appeal, and bail was allowed in £100 — and securities for costs. A meeting was held in the Druids Hall, Kimbolton, last evening, to proceed with the formation of the contemplated Chamber of Commerce, Mr Baddeley being in the chair. The meeting was well attended, and the election of officers resulted as follows : — President, Mr W. G. Carruthers; VicePresidents, Messrs Baddeley and Hansen ; Committee, Messrs W. Banks, L. E. Jackson, W. S. Poole, C. Baynes, V. Middlemiss, P. Nesdale, and F. Alford : Secretary and Treasurer, Mr F. Fanthorpo. It was considered advisable to meet monthly, on the second Tuesday in each month ; special meetings to be notified. It was deemed advisable to meet next Tuesday, 12th instant, to discuss the Forest Road Loan versus a larger scheme submitted by Mr L. E. Jackson, when a large attendance of members is expeoted.
