Bowater has been appointed country canvasser for the State Fire Insurance. A notice, as to the price of bread, is inserted by the local bakers in our issue to-day. Mr A. H. Atkinson will bold a sale of drapery, on behalf ot the Sydney Cash Drapery Co., in the Manchester Hotel sample rooms, on Saturday next. The three-act musical comedy, " My Sweetheart," was produced at the Drill Hall last evening by the Palmerston North amateur performers before a good house. Mr E. Ellery Gilbert, the well-known tuner and importer of pianos, is on a visit to Feilding and surrounding district, and will remain for some two or three weeks. Orders left with Messrs G. Barry and Co. will receive prompt attention. In the first page of the original score of '* The Messiah " Handel has made a memorandum tbat it was begun on tbe 22nd of August 1741 ; arid in the last page he bas recorded that it was finished on the 12th of September, 1741. Incredible though it appears this great work was composed in 23 daya. The Catholic Bagaar was largely attended last evening. The various raffles were indulged in with as much zeal as on the previous evenings. The numerous side shows were also lces t in full swing. A drag leaves the Carbine Stables, at 10 o'clock to-morrow, for the races at Jheltonham. Mrs William McLean, wife of one of the candidates for Wellington East, died yesterday morning. The deoeased lady, who had enjoyed excellent health, attonded her husband's meeting on Tuesday night, and on reaching home was seized with cerebral apoplexly and died about twelvo hours later. Mr McLean has, under these circumstances, placed himself in the hands of his com- i mittee. There was a good attendance at the Technical School Committee meeting on Tuesday, when the Rev A. C Lawry presided The Mayor (Mr F. F Haggitt) and Mr E. Wackrill were added to the Committee. It was decided to have a list prepared for members of the Committee to get contributions towards the cost of the buildings. Mr Grant's j name was added to the Committee to • interview local bodies Votes of thanks were passed to Messrs Chappie and j Darvell tor their assistance in teaching jup to the present. Mr A. Hirschel was ' recommended as teacher in engineering, and Mr T. D. Johnson in plumbing. , It was decided to get circulars printed and sent out to parents throughout the district in connection with tbe Technical and Continuation Classes. Mr E. J. Wackrill was appointed assistant Secretary.
