POLITICAL NOTES.

m A Southern contemporary publishes the following with regard to the prospects of Wellington candidates: — The Government party are evidently not quite satisfied with Mr Izard's chances of election for Wellington North. At all events over tures were recently made to Mr C. P. Skerretfc, our leading barrister, to become a candidate in the Government interest. Mr Skerrett, however, could not see his way clear to enter the lists. There is now some talk of Mr J. G. Mackerrow as a Government candidate. The seat is regarded as a safe one for Mr John Duthie, who has a splendid record as a straight going business man, and an equally straight going politician. Mr Duthie is, however, not very keen about continuing in the political arena, and there is just a chance that he may not be a candidate at the general election. As he is a landmark in Wellington politics, general regret will be felt should he Snally decide to retire. For Wellington central Mr Fisher is. the strongest- candidate announced as yet, but Mr O'Kegan, a single taxer and a former member of Parliament, may eventually be found in the lists under the Government, colors. In his case the Opposition would probably not put up. a candidate. Mr Aitken will probably be the Opposition candidate for the third Wellington seat, with every chance i of success against all comers. The Hon. T. W. Hislop will b& .supported by the Opposition for Newtown, and his chances of election are good. There ase indication that the Government will throw over Mr Barber, and transfer their support to Dr Chappell.
