BAND CONTEST.
♦ Reception and Garden Party. In spite of the very unfavorable afternoon quite a number of ladies attended the meeting convened by Mrs P. Y. Lethbridge and Mrs J. Prior, at the Library Rooms. Messrs Carty, Goodbehere, and Walker were also present, and after explaining the particulars of the programme and submitting some suggestions from the General Committee, withdrew. A sub committee of ladies was appointed to visit the race course grounds and report which would be the most suitable buildings to apply for. Other preliminaries were discussed and the meeting adjourned until Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., when the ladies of the town are one and all cordially invited by Mesdames Lethbridge and Prior to attend and lend assistance. The object, to provide a pleasant and enjoyable afternoon to our visitors and the public generally, is one that will commend itself to every one,and it is to be hoped that all will combine in endeavoring to make the whole proceedings successful. The programme, briefly outlined, is that the bands, at intervals of five minutes, leave Manchester Square at 2.80 and march to the grounds, when speeches of welcome will be made by Mr F. Y. Lethbridge, M.H.R., and His Worship the Mayor. Afternoon tea will then be dispensed by the ladies, and each band will give selections of sweet popular music.
