POTATOES.

With reference to the local market, says the Wanganui Herald, supplies are very short and the prices correspondingly high, £14 per too being the ruling figure. In conversation with Mr T. D. Cummins, who has had a long business experience in Wanganui, he informed us yesterday morning that the price of potatoes was higher than he had ever before experienced, and he was inclined to think that the top figure had not yet been reached. The outlook for i householders was, he thought, by no means encouraging, as he believed it would take several years before prices reached reasonable limits. la arriving at his conclusions, Mr Cummins said that aeed potatoes ware now so high that the paoc m&u (tod imall

gettler could not afford to buy t hem ; while, on the otber hand, many of those who were in a position to purchase seed, say at £12 to £14 a ton, would not take the risk of planting for fear of the disease, which had | apoeared in various places in tbe district. No doubt there would be some little speculation in potatogrowing, and the man who was able to evade the disease would do well, but there waa considerable risk.
