RISING IN THE CAUCASUS.
> Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright London, Sept. 6. Reuter's Tiflis correspondent reports that hordes of Tartar refugees are terrorising the districts south-east of the Caucasus. A series of engagements were fought at Shusha between Tartars and Armenians behind regular positions. There were terrible scenes of pillage and murder, hundreds being killed. The condition of Baku is hourly becoming worse. There are innumerable incendiary fires occurring. The rioters fired workshops in the Balanthan suburb. Troops are powerless to suppress the conflict between Tartars and Armenians. Received Sept. 7, 9.30 a.m. Constantinople, Sept. 6. An Armenian, named Vartanian, a naturalised American, was sentenced to death at Stamboul for killing Apik Undjian, a wealthy Armenian, for declining to contribute to the revolutionary funds. Vartanian was an emissary from the Armenian revolutionaries in America.
