PROGRESSIVE FEILDING.

11 A handsome addition has been made to the York Coffee Palace in •I Fergusson-street. The first thing to 0 catch the eye on entering the build ing is a pair of picked heart of nmu n plate glass doors, hung on Smith's patent spring hinges. Beyond these a massive staircase has been erected 11 consisting of cut string?, returned [j treads and ri?ers, carved newels and turned bannisters ; the spaudrail is , tilled with sunk panelling collection e moulded, the underside of the landa ing and second flight being finished in a similar manner. The whole of $ the timber used is picked heart of .8 rimu. A lincrustra dado has been 0 placed on the wall side, which adds <J to the general appearance. The up ftairs portion to which the stair n gives access consists of 10 well ll ventilated bedrooms, sitting-room, 5> bath room and lavatory, the whole having been designed to give plenty of light and fresh air. A wide passage runs from front to back, g intersecting with another leading to a the fire-escape, which runs right round the back portion of the build „ ing. The front portion has been y altered beyond recognition. A roomy y balcony ha3 been erected, the front '1 of which is ba ustraded ; below this r the frieze filled with muranese glass shelters the front entrance from the 1 weather. Above the balcony a '• verandah has been placed, the ends e being filled with margin light it sashes glazed with green and white 3 , art glass, which gives a very pleasing appearance. The centre of the t parapet has been raised to form a d panel m whioh York Coffee Palace n in block letters covered with gold ;- leaf have been placed, the whole >1 being finished with a pediment g similar to that on the York Build ings. The whole of the alterations '" reflect great credit on the designer, g Mr A. James, the contractor, Mr W. g Irvine, and the sub contractors, Mr >t Dalton and Mr Harford.
