COLLAPSE OF A BUILDING.

Many Women and Children Killed Albauy, N.Y., August B.— The middle section of the big department store of Joseph Meyers and Co. collapsed to-day, oarrying down with ifc ovor a hundred persons who were caught in the chaos of brick, plaster and wooden boams. Between twenty and thirty men, women and children were killed. Anything like a complete list of the dead is impossible until workers have reached the bottom of the debris. With few exceptions the dead and injured wero employees of the iirm, the majority being girls?. The building was old, but always considered safe. Workmen were making extensive repairs. A gang of Italian workmen started to remove a pillar which supported the main floor. Evidently they failed to brace the floor properly, (or scarcely had they loosened the iron post than the whole three floors above came tumbling down. The building did not take lire, but when darkness came it was estimated that nearly 50 persous remained in tho ruins, and that not more than half of these could survive the weight pressing upon them.
