rUFULATIUN U* THE COMMONWEALTH. «. — The returns of the population of the Commonwealth on March 31st show that by far the largest proportion of the Commonwealth is now homegrown. Of the total number of inhabitants, amounting to 8,771,715, rather more than 77 per cent were born within the Commonwealth, less than 1 per cent claim New Zealand as their birthplace, rather more than 18 per cent were born in the United Kingdom or other British possessions than Australia or New [Zealand and those of foreign extraction, including of course, all who were born in countries not under the British Hag, are rather less than 4 per cent. The returns show that New South Wales has drawn to her territory many more of the native-born of Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania than those States have attracted of Australians born in New South Wales. It is perhaps contrary to whßt might have been expected that, whlie there are only 6192 of those resident in New Zealand who claim New South Wales as their birthplace, there are 10,589 persons living in New South Wales who were born in New Zealand.

The encyclical declares that " In view of the complexity of modern studies and the manifold errors which prevail, it has become impossible for individual interpreters of the holy books to explain and defend them as the needs of the hour require," and it has " become necessary that their common studies should receive assistance and direction under the auspices and guidance of the Apostolic See." To this end, the encyclical says, the Pontiff has established a commission of serious men, " whose duty it will be to devote their entire energy to insure that the Divine words may receive the explanation demanded of them by the times." The members of the commission, the encyclical says, in regard to tbe uncompromising maintenance of the authority of the Scriptures, must exercise earnest care and diligance." .1 R VT NOW/NTT
