Lord Hawke's Team v Wanganui.

Wanganui, January 5. The cricket match Wanganui fifteen v. Lord Hawke's team was continued to-day in beautiful weather. The Englishmen won by 8 wickets. in the first innings the Englishmen made 140 — Thompson 49, Warner 27, Stanning 14, Whatman 13, Hargreaves 13. Wanganui in the second innings made 77— J. M. Marshall 19, Fanning 11, G. Marshall 10. The Englishmen in the second innings lost 3 wickets for 59 runs. Given favorable weather, there should be a tremendous gathering at Palmerston N. on the occasion of the match Lord Hawke's eleven v. Manawatu eighteen on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The Railway Department is issuing excursion fares to Palmerston, and the Manawatu Cricket Association have made every preparation for a large gathering. A new grandstand to seat 400 people has been erected on probably as fine a ground as can be found in New Zealand. The Manawatu team have had considerable practice at the nets, and should make a better show against the visitors than has hitherto been the case. Apart, however, from the fixture at the conclusion of the match on the second day the Englishmen will give a two hours' demonstration on the Oval of a truly marvellous character, cutting and playing the ball on the Oval as an expert billiard player would on a table. Visitors to the Auckland and Taranaki matchs state that these two hours are worth travelling a hundred miles to witness. No doubt on an occasion such as this our readers will avail themselves of thiß rare opportunity.
