A MATRIMONIAL MUDDLE?" Deserted Woman's Bewildering Position. The extraordinary marriage mud die which Mr Avery, a solicitor, re cently outlined at tbo Tottenham Petty Sessions came before the Jus tices a few days ago on a summons against Win. Lilley, a shop manager of 6, Broadway, Leighton, for desert ing his wife. Mr Avery, who appeared for the wife, explained that 30 years ago ; when a widow, she married Roberi Smith. They parted after 10 years, and believing him to be dead, she married Lilley, who was many years younger than herself. This year she summoned Lilley for desertion, whereupon he prosecuted her for bigamy, having found out that Smith was alive. The bigamy charge failed, however, but under the circumstances Mrs Lilley did not proceed with the summons for desertion. Recently Mrs Lilley ascertained that Smith was already married when she went through the marriage ceremony with him, She claimed, therefore, to be Lilley's lawful wife, and obtained the present summons. Mr Avery added that, to complicate matteis further, Lilley had recently married again. Tho defendant's solicitor, however, denied this. A still further surprise was the production in Court of an infirm old woman, who said that she was the first and real Mrs Robert Smith. She, too, however, had married again, and was now Mrs Plead, of Mitchell-street, Hoxton. She said she was married to Smith in 1856, but had not seen him since 1862. Smith at this point was brought into Court. Mrs Head gave him a glance, and at onco exclaimed, " That's him." Smith was then sworn, but after adjusting his spectacles and scanning Mrs Head's face, he said be could not recognise a single feature. "If this is Clara," he declared " the day of resurrection is come, that's all. Addressing Mrs Head, Smith was asking, " Do you remember the time when tho potman — ," but the old woman to the great amusement of the Court, cut him short with " You always was a liar." The case was adjourned. " Wo are old friends, this bottle and I. Wo h;ive known each other for over sixty years.
