Richards, while handling a pea rifle accidentally shot his mother in the back, the ball passing through the abdomen. The case is considered serious. The death is reported of John E. Ryan, a young settler in Southern Westland. He -is fifth of the family carried off by consumption. Napier, This Day. The doath. is announced of Mrs McKinnon, one of the oldest settlers of the district. She and her husband settled at Arapawanui in 1868, and lived there ever since. Deceased was 74 years of age. Wanganui, This Day. While three men were driving yesterday the horse shied at a railway engine and swerved, capsizing the trap. The occupants were thrown out close to the railway line. One had a collarbone broken and contusion of tho leg, another had his ribs fractured, and tho third escaped with a few bruises. The iirst mentioned is in the hospital. The engine pulled up clear of the obstruction.
