AN OLD MAN NEARLY BURNT TO DEATH.

An old man had a narrow escape from being burned to death yesterday while in a state of intoxication* He went to sleep under some trees in the Queen's Avenue, where the grass caught fire through the ashes of his pipe. When he was awakened by the flames his clothes were on fire and he made for a wire fence close to, but fell into a ditch in which a quantity of dry leaves had accumulated and began burning fiercely. In scrambling out he attempted to get through the wires but could nofc and would have been .burned to death had not a resident observed "his struggles and gone to the rescue*. He was taken to the hospital.
