THE ELINGAMITE'S BOATS.

At a meeting of the Marine Board a letter was received from the Secretary of the New Zealand Marine Department, asking whether certain of the evidence given at the Elingamite enquiry would effect Captain Deary, the Board's Surveyor, who allowed the steamer to leave the port without making sure the boats were provided lyjtb compasses. Captain Deary states that although his notebook showed no detailed account of the last inspection, he was perfectly certain that each of the four lifeboats contained the articles insisted on by the regulations. If it had not been so he would never have given the necessary certificate.
