OBITUARY.

Our Napier exchanges inform us that profound regret was caused throughout Hawke's Bay by the death of Mr A. 3. Cotterill, Crown Prosecutor, from pneumonia, which took place on Wednesday, after one week's illness. Deceased was born in Colney, Norfolk, England, in 1848, and came to this colony in 1851 with his father, the late Bey. G. Cotterill, Canon of Christchurch. He was educated at Christ's College, and studied law with Messrs Hanmer and Harper, of Christchurch, being admitted to the Bar in 1878 by Mr , Justice Grisson. In 1874 lie coiqb io , Napier and after managing the business of the late Hon. J. N. Wilson, M.L.C., then Crown Prosecutor, for ! about a year, he entered into partnership with him. Mr Cotterill was appointed Crown Solicitor for Hawke's Bay in 1877, and after that till the dissolution of the then existing firm, practically all the Crown and other business passed through his hands. In 1877 Mr Cotterill married Julia, daughterof the late Mr Robert Stuart, first Mayor of Napier. Mrs Cotterill died in 1888. A family of four is left to mourn its loss — Miss Helen Cotterill and Messrs George, Keith, and Basil. George was a Uieut. in the Eighth New Zealand Contingent, and is now in England, having gone there from South Africa with the Coronation Contingent. It was to this absent son that the father with almost his last breath, dictated a touching message of encouragement and affection. In the death of Mr Cotterill, Hawke's Bay has lost one of its most valued residents, a gentleman whose high character and blameless life won the respect and admiration of all throughout the town and district.
