THE PLAGUE.
Death of the. Auckland Patient. Telegraph. i J ress Association Copyright Sydney, April 27. One of the plague patients has succumbed. This Day. ' No plague cases since Friday. To date 107 cases ; 27 deaths and id discharged. Brisbane, April 26. One case of plague is reported. This Day. Three cases of plague — One fatal. Two of the previous patients are also dead. Auckland, April, 2G. Virtue is confined to the Plague Hospital, and is doing well so far. The family has been isolated, and none of them have developed any symptoms of plague, though it is seven days since Virtue was taken ill. The house has been gutted and fumigated and other precautions taken. This Day. Virtue, the plague patient, died this morning. Chbistchurch, April 2G. Dr Syrnes, Health Officer at Canterbury, states that under the present conditions in this district, it is highly improbable the plague can obtain a footing, and it is unlikely that it can be introduced in a similar manner to that said to be responsible for the case in Auckland, as Lyttelton is very rarely the first port of call. The Post says : — lt is understand that the case of suspicious illness reported from Auckland, and in which precautions were taken to isolate the patient, has proved not to be either plague or small-pox. Sir Joseph Ward, while in Dunedin on Friday, received the following telegram from the Health Officer at Auckland : — I regret to have to inform you of the existence of plague in Auckland. Patient was taken ill on the 19th. Infection was caught through handling cargo from an infected port. There is little likelihood of further cases, as the rats here are not infected. The patient was at once removed to a special hospital, and everything burned. All contacts are doing well, and are being well cared for.
