Dunedin, April 14. During tbe week ended to-day, returns have been reported from 47 dredges, the total yield being 1 soßoz lgr ldwt, an average of 30 ounces per dredge. Additional returns Upper Waipori, 40oz 18wt8 ; Gold King, 31oz 14wts ; Waikaka United, 260z, Wellington, April 14. Two ratepayers have taken steps to bring about an inquiry, voder "Tbe Tramways Act, 1894." into the loan proposals ol the City Council, relating to tbe construction of its electric tramways. A petition has been forwarded to the Minister of Public Works and the Governor on tbe subject Lhristchurch, This Day. The Arbitration Court awarded £1572 to the attorneys of Mrs Simon as compensation for lands taken in the construction of the Central Yard by the City Council. The claim was for £1800. While absent at the Tenth Contingent camp, Captain Hobday's house was entered and a large quantity of jewellery and cutlery stolen ; also a blank cheque, which was filled in and uttered. A youth was arrested with a portion of the proceeds upon him. He was remanded. Hawera, This Day. The Rev. Mr Dukes, Wesleyan Minister, who has been transferred to Kaiapoi, was farewelled last evening and presented with a purse of sovereigns and other tokens of esteem. Palmerston N., This Day. At the S.M. Court to-day a local baker was charged with selling short weight and with failing to stamp his bread, fie was convicted and fined £1 on the last charge.
