EMPLOYMENT OF ZULUS. Telegraph Press Association. Copyright London, May 14. The Hon. W. St. John Broclrick, in reply to Mr Bryce, member for Aberdeen South, stated Lord Kitchener had recommended the Government to employ armed Zulus to protect Zululand against the Boer raiders, .and unarmed natives were acting under British officers to collect the cattle outsine Zululand. A COMMANDANT KILLED. Commandant Swanepol and four other Boers were killed and six wounded in a skirmish near Pear- ' ston.
Yesterday afternoon Regi. - Sergt.MajorF. Pleasants (a son of Mr 0. Pleasants, of Colyton), and Troopers - R. Simpson (a son of Mr G. B. Simpson, Colyton), of the Third , Contingent (Rough Riders), and . Trooper G. Thomas (Second Con- . tingent), of Colyton, returned from i the war in South Africa. Having gone on to Wanganui on the previous day to be present at a reception r there, they returned to Feilding by j the 4 p.m. train. They were met at . the station by the Mayor (Mr E. Goodbehere), Staff-Captain Kirton, and a large number of citizens who welcomed the troopers back to Feilding after a distinguished service in L South Africa. Corporal J. J. O'Reilly, ' formerly a resident of Apiti, where he held a position in the school, was j also- a passenger by the train foi Palmerston, where his parents i reside.
