Bank Holidays.

At the conference of Chambers of Commerce in Ghristchurch during the second sittings, Mr A R. Robert n ( Vuckland) introduced ihe question of bank holidays. In New Zealand they bad had nineteen bank holidays in ttie year just passed, na against nine in Victoria, and ten in New South Wales. The inconvenience in commercial c rcles by the closing of the banks for four consecutive days at Easter had been very great. After giving other examples, Mr Roberton moved to the effect that the closing of bonks on certain days, not public holidays, being inconvenient to cpmmercial circles and unnecessary, should be discontinued, and that representations be made to the bank authorities to this effect. Mr 'JJurnbull eecqnded the motion on principle. He thought it absurd ihat tbe banks should be closed on saints' days, when other business places open. Mr Waymouth, in supporting ihe resolution, gave an additional reason— the risk retail traders were a»ked to undertake by keeping a large sum in takings by them. Mr Denniston said eyen (he bank clerks did not desire the holidays. No work on Thursday meat double work on Friday. The motion was carried.
