When we penned the brief article which appeared yesterday commenting on the absence of our public men from the Patriotic Demonstration, we had not thn slightest idea that we should raise such ft hornet's nest about our ears. All that we, and other members of the public, wanted to know wawhy they were not there. We did not criticise any action of the Councillorindividually or collectively, because they had done nothing — and theref jre there was nothing to criticise. From the report we publish elsewhere it will be seen that a very unnecessary amount of heat was introduced into the discussion. There was nothing to justify such wrath, and the impression ojust be left on the minds of any uti biased observers that several of the councillors, feeling themselves in tlnwioflir, showed their sense of their shortcomings in that peculiar way. As to the veiled threats of others of the councillors, we can afford to take mnotice of them ; but we will say oun for all that aa public men they are always open to praise or censure, us the case may deuiaud, and we wii always continue to do what we li-im endeavoured to do in the past — men out equal justice to all. We owe h duty to the public which we intend to t'ultil, without fear or favor.
