Infected Fruit.
Telegraph. Press Association. Copyright Dunedin, September 9. A case under the Orchard and Garden Pest- Act came before Mr Caiew, S.M., to-day, when F. J. Hopkm was charged wtth being concerned in imrodueing citrus fruit infect. d with scale. The fruit wos brought to Wellington by the Waikare and to Dunedin by the Hawea, where it was condemned by the Government In. spector. Mr Hopkin took a case of fruit and shipped it to Wellington for exhibition there to the members of Parliament. Mr Carew, S M., said Hopkin was not shown to have been the importer or consignee and may have purchased the fruit after it had reached Wellington or Dunedin. He thongbt the words of the regulation " introducing into Ne»v Zealand " refers to bringing the fruit into the colony, and not to an act of exportation of the fruit after it baa been landed in the colony. He therefore did not think defendant could be prosecuted. Tho case was dismissed.
