Brown, H Fraser Correspondence was received and dealt with as follows : — From Valuer-General in reply to communications from the Council with reference to the reduction of valuations within the County, and in response to a request he forwarded, a schedule .showing list of alterations which had been made in assessments in the County by the Assessment j Court and since the Court sat, and j asking for the Council's opinion ou any they thought should not have I been reduced. From A. H. Tompkins, chairman Kiwitea County Council, forwarding Council's objections to proposed alterations and additions to the Apiti bridge and approaches ; tbe objections being tbat the bridge was safe :ind the work was unnecessary, that a detailed estimate, how such estimated cost was arrived at, had not been supplied, that it was the only bridge over the larger rivers in district which proved itself capable of withstanding heavy floods Eucb as that of 1897, that that Council was not in a financial position to permit their contributing. Wagstaff, asking permission to erect wire fence on outer edge of formed road opposite part sec tion block X. — Permission granted subject to Engineer's approval From F. Richards, asking that his " fourths " be hypothecated towards paying special rate on loan. From J, King asking that Irvine's drain be filled in as soon as possible. From J. Aitken, complaining that J. Jeffries had left his fence unfinished and asking the Couuoil to have the cause remedied by erecting fence along road deviation as arranged. — Referred to Engineer to deal with. The Engineer reported on the various roads and contract- within tbe county. Awahou riding — roads in fair order. Tamaki riding — Main Valley road and Makiekie roads in bad order aud required repairing ; it was intended to put some of the Main Road North under contract for next month ; the sideling from the low flat to the Delaware could now bo done j the clearing should now be done between Diggers and Jennings creeks ; if metalling was to be done on the Makiekie road this season some parts should ba made wider ; about two thirds of the clearing on the Delaware had been done and a track cleared through the balance. Umutoi riding — Bush tracks still bad ; work on the Apiti-Norsewood road, between the Mangapikopiko and Umutoi ridings, which was being done by Government cooperative men, was makine slow progress Mangapikopiko riding — roads in fair order. Coal Greek riding — roads in good order ; metalling can be done when roads dry enough ; metal was required to repair metalled portions of roads. Pohangina riding — on the formation done last summer the slips continue ; contracts were progressing but slowly ; there was a tendency on the part of contractors to curtail the width of formation and other inferior works ; steps bad to be taken to prevent this as much as possible; contracts for metalling may be put in hand as soon as tbe weather i.s suitable. Mangaone riding — roads in good order. From G. Rankin, junr., chairman '•f a meeting of ratepayers in the Umutoi riding to consider the Engineer's estimate for constructing roads in a proposed special rating district, over which it was proposed to raise a loan, reported that the following resolutions were passed, namely— That the Table Flat road be made ; that half of section 39 and two thirds of section 15 be saddled with a special rate, anc| that the Umutoi Road South be made to the south boundary of section 38 ; that -Sl5O be spent on Table Flat Road East ; that the Government bo written to enquiring whether there is any balance o£ the 5s an acre unexpended, and if so if the Government intended to spend it, and when ; that the County Council be asked to raise a loan of .£IB2O to be spent according to schedule ; that the main road be completed first aud the money ba spent on bye-roads pro rata ; that the rate be struck on the unimproved value. The Engineer's estimate was as follows :— IBO chains Table Flat road, £595 ; 85 chains Umutoi road Nortb, £297 10s ; 160 chains Umutoi Road South, £704; 110 chains Table Flat road, £15Q Resolved, That tbe following tenders be accepted : — For contract No. 189, formation and metalling 100 chains Awa road, S. McMillan, £141 ; contract No. 199, formation and part metalling 100 chains Branch Road South, McElhgott ond Burke, £191 15s ; contract No. 200, formation and metalling 67 chains Branch Road North, Isaac Cooksley, £72 lis. Besolved, Tbat tbe County balance* sheet for the year ended March 81st, 1898, be adopted and tbat the Clerk get 50 copies printed. Resolved, That this Couucil thanks tho Valuer General for bis letter of September 6, with list of alterations in roll, and instruct their Clerk to furnish him with tbe desired informatioi;, Resolved, That ibe Engineer be em» powered to spend tbe sum of £15 on Euku street, Pobangina township. Besolved, Tbat tho following alterations be made on rate roll :— G. Shannon in place of W. A. Hall, sectiou '.26, block IX, Mangaone ; W G. Aitken in place of Jobn Barr, section 12, block VI, Pobangina ; Vickers aud Thomas in place of Armstrong and Holmes, sections 22 aud 75, block IX. Besolved, That Crs Vicary. Fraser and Currie be appointed as acommittco to inspect the rating area for the Makiekie aud .tfakoura loan aud Pobangina No. 1 Association loau. — DuriDg tho discussiou on this motiou Cr Currie said that ho thought tho Coal Creek riding should contribnto oue half to the cost of bridgo across Coal Creel, stream on the northern boundary of tbat riding ; the cost was estimated at £-500. Cr Asbworth objected to bis riding contributing as none of his ratepayers would derive any benefit. Besolved. That tho Makiekie and Makoura loau proposals be published in tbe Marton Advocate aud Pohangina Wo,. 1 Association lo&u propusals be published in the Feilding Star. Accounts were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
