EUROPEAN HARVESTS.
THE COMMERCIAL BANK OF AUSTRALIA. MILITARY INSTRUCTION FOR CHINA. (Per Press Association.) London, July 25. The New Lealand Iron and Steel Co., with a capital of £450,000, is issuing L 350.000 worth of shares to the public. The Company has been formed to acquire and work the Taranaki ironsand deposits. The entire province of Enyrna. Madagascar, has broken out iv open revolt to French rule. Li Hung Chang is discussing with the French Government the basis of commercial treaty favorable to France. He has purchased a large number of rifles in France, and is engaging cavalry instructors. He proposes to obtain officers from Germany to teach the Chinese gunnery, and will secure Naval instructors from Great Britain. Tbe newspapers condemn the petition lodged by Mr James Webster, of the Depositors Committee, to liquidate tbe London branch of tue Commercial Bank of Australia. The Financial Times regards it as mischievous. At the Bisley meeting of the National Rifle Association, the Queen's Prize was won by Lieut. Thomson, ot fhe Queen's Edinburghs, with an aggregate of 273 points. July 26. New Zealand rabbits are quoted atßd. British harvesting operations are progressing satisfactorily, and experts are unanimously of opinion the yield will be a favorable one. Reports from France and Russia state their yield will not be up to expectations, but otherwise the return from the continent will be favorable. The Economist says the action of Jas. Webster in moving for the liquidation of the London branch of tbe Commercial Bank is from every point of view extremely reprehensible. The Bank has not made default, and no question of that kind can arise till the deposits are repayable some years hence. It is difficult to understand, says the Economist, how anybody with the interests of the Bank at heart could enter upon such proceedings. Tbe Times also condemns Webster's action. H|The Statist says better feeling is growing at Home regarding Australian banks and the colonies generally, and it is difficult to imagine how Webster's action can be to the creditors' interest, as his view is only that of an insignificant minority.
