A CHILD DROWNED IN A WELL. [Per Press Association! Dumedin, August 12. A ohiid, slightly over two years old, son of a miner at Green Island, named McLachlan, has been drowned in a well close to the house. The hills round the city had a fresh coating of snow this morning, and rain and hail fell during the day. Wellington, August 12. An old pensioner of the 9th Regiment named James Begg, aged 75, committed suicide at the Hutt by hanging himself. He had been drinking and was brooding over the loss of his last pension money. AxjCKL4Np, August 12. It is reported, that the Auckland Rope Fibre and Matting Company's works, the property of the Bank of New Zealand Estates Campany, has been disposed of to a syndicate, which has also purchased two southern rope companies' works in Dunedin and Invercargill. The establishment of a Chamber of I Mines is contemplated.
