Meeting of Settlers at Birmingham.
A meeting of the Committee which was formed sometime ago for the purpose of obtaining estimates for forming and metalHngl Edwardfc street to Mcßeth's road was held in Mr Lowes' Hotel on Saturday last. Present — Messrs Tompkins (chairman*, Lowes, Laing, Burdekin, Richardson, and Whishaw. The following correspondence from Mr Bra}', engineer, was read : — Estimated cost of constructing Edward street from Kimbolton road to Mcßeth's road : To joining, cnlverting, bridging, and metaling about 200 chains Edward street. .£950. Sections proposed to be rated : Township sections 3, 4, 29 to 35, 37 to 56, 64, 66, 71, 20, 21, 24, 25. 28. Rural sections 24, 25, 26, 22. 30, 48. Valuation of above sections— j£4816. Amount of special rate required to pay interest on lean — two and three-eighths of a penny in the £. The idea of the meeting seemed to be to get the street metalled as" far as now formed and form as far as possible. Resolved, That the Chairman endeavour to get fresh estimates from the Engineer, and, if possible, to get the Board to lay out the road. Proposed by Mr Tpmpkins, sepondpd by Mr Burdekin, That the Kiwitea County Council be approached and asked if they will assist by doing half of the road. Proposed by Mr Lowes, seconded by Mr Richardson, That Messrs Burdekin, Laing, Wishaw, and Tonapkins, be a deputation to wait on the Board in reference to the above.
