(Per Press Association). Invercargill, Juuc 3. At the Police Court, Frank Hewitt was lined £1 and costs for selling liquor without a license. The Bench commented in strong terms on the action of the police in engaging spies to secure a conviction. At the annual Licensing Meeting all licenses were renewed for ten o'clock. Christchurch, June 3. At the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee for Christchurch District to day, the applications for the renewals of licenses in respect of several hotels against which informations for Sunday trading have been laid by the Prohibitionists, were adjourned till after these charges have been heard in the Magistrate's Court. The epplication for the renewal of the license of Coker's hotel was adjourned till June 24 th in consequence of a petition by clergymen and others making certain allegation-} with regard to the conduot of one of the bars. All the other applications for renewals were granted, Napier, June 3At the Licensing Court to - day strong opposition was manifested to tbe renewal of the license for the Provincial Hotel to P. Gleeson on account of recent events which had become public properly. A largely signed petition against th 9 renewal was put iv, and the polics also opposed. After evidence and argument, lasting the whole of lhe afternoon, the committee by six to 2 decided to renew the license, but refused costs to Gleeson.
