THE FIRE BRIGADE AND THE LOAN.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAK. Sir, — Re the proportion of the loan rate for the Fire Brigade Station, I am sorry to see Mr Reid did not count the cost, or he would not object to it. lam aware Mr Reid is taxed heavily because he is unfortunate enough to have a .sheep farm in the Borough, and if I was in his place possibly I should work on " the powers that be " to have not only the rates but the dimensions of the Borough reduced. The part of the proposed building to be devoted to the use of the Brigade cannot cost more than fifty or sixty pounds at the outside which at five per cent would only cost the whole of the Borough from two pounds ten shillings to three pounds a year. Mr Reid— for his share, would have to pay three or four pence — and if I asked Mr Reid to subscribe twenty times that to the Brigade fund, he would not dream of refusing. I am, &c, Alfred Eade, Captain Fire Brigade.
