At the annual meeting of the United Farmers' Alliance shareholders at Palmerston last Saturday the Chairman said the object for which the auctioneering business was opened, namely the reduction of the commission on sales, had been attained, and as the Directors found the business could not be continued without a further supply of capital it had been discontinued. The yards were let for £100 per year. They had no intention of resuming the auctioneering business. The third annual meeting of shareholders in the Farmers' Alliance was held on Saturday afternoon, when there was a large attendance. Mr J. Martin, Chairman of Directors, occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet, particulars of which have already been been published, was adopted. At the conclusion of the meeting a resolution was carried " That we hayc read with interest Mr D. J. Nathan's paper on the frozen meat trade, and other products, and whilst not wishing to give an unqualified approval to the scheme, we think that the Agricultural Department should call a meeting in Wellington of delegates from the various agricultural and co-operative associations to discuss the question." The wrestling match for the lightweight championship of New Zealand, Gneco-Koman and Catch-as-catch-can styles, between J. Sutherland, lightweight champion, and J. W. F. The first bout, Grseco-Roman style, was won by Sutherland, who threw his opponent after fifteen minutes wrestling. The second, Catch-as-catch-can, was won by Halcombe (after wrestling 6 minutes), who also won the next two falls, the bouts lasting 5*- and 2t\ minutes respectively. At the conclusion of the match Sutherland admitted he had been fairly beaten, but offered to wrestle Halcombe again in three or four months time. Mr E. J. Kelleher acted as referee. We are informed that the directors of the Australian Mutual Provident Society have again considered the question of the rate of interest charged to members who borrow on the security of their policies, and it has been decided to still further liberalise the conditions under which such loans can be obtained. For many years it was the practice of the Society to charge a uniform rate of 7 per cent on all policy loans, -whether the amount required was £5 or £5000. Recently, however, an alteration was made under which borrowers of an amount of £2 or over for a fixed term of not less than two years, should be charged only 6 per cent, provided they did not borrow more than 75 per cent of the surrender value of the policy, instead of 60 per cent, which was the limit available in terms of the bylaws. It is now, however, determined by the directors to advance to the full extent of 90 per cent if required, in all classes, and to charge the reduced rate of 6 per cent to all borrowers of not less than £100 who take the money for a fixed term of at least 1 year, interest being charged quarterly. This regulation will come into force on the next quarter day, viz., Ist July.
