PIRATES I. v.. FELLDING I The match between the above teams played on Saturday last on the Oval resulted in a draw, after one of the best contested games ever witnessed in Feilding. Both teams played substitutes, Martini and Stuart being represented by G. Shannon and J. Robinson, to whom the thanks of the local club are due for their valuable assistance. The Pirates won the toss and decided to play downhill. During the whole of the first spell the play was kept very close by the visitors, and deßpite the attempts of the local backs to get up passing rushes, play was kept principally in the centre of the field During the second spell the luck seemed to be with the visitors, as several times the Feilding team were within an ace of scoring, but the sterling defence of the Pirates' backs frustrated all their attempts. Both sides had one force<-down, the game ending with the ball in the Pirates' twenty-fives. The visitors all played well, the most conspicuous being Smith, Rush, Perrin, (forwards) Rockley and W. Robinson (backs). The Feilding forwards played a sterling game, Johnston and Giesen being seen to great advantage. The play of the backs was very good, but on one or two occasions their passing was very wide. Richards unfortunately received a bad knock in the eye in the early part of the game, which handicapped him very severely. Messrs Nash and Saywell acted as line umpires, and Mr A. C. Matheson gaye every satisfaction as referee. The Marton Football Club have notified the Secretary of the Manawatu Rugby Union that they haye withdrawn from the Championship matches. The following team will represent the Red Star Club in a match with Pirates 11., at Feilding, on Wednesday afternoon :— Backs, Mingins, Way, J. Smith, G. Foster, J. Hurdle, Jas. Evans, Forwards, W. Smith, W. McMillan, Jos. Smith, J. Evans, W. Dempsey, Parkes, J. Rosoman, J. Hamilton, and Brinkman. Emergencies, W. James, V. Martin.
