DESERTS HER HUSBAND AND EIGHT CHILDREN. (Per Press Association). Napier, May 7. A woman has been arrested at Sydney under peculiar circumstances. Her husband, R. C. Laws, is a mechanical engineer, well respected, and he had saved some money and was also secretary and treasurer to the Rechabite Lodge, having about i'oOO of its funds ! m hand. He gave his wife deposit | notes on both accounts to re-lodge the | deposits in the Bank of New Zealand. Some time after she said she was going to nurse a friend at Tomoaua and went against the remonstrances of her husband, who was left with eight young children. As she did not return, be made inquiries and found s*hn had never been at Tomoaua, but had gone on to Wellington and taken a steamer for Sydney en route to England. Her husband then instituted further inquiries, discovering that she bad forged his name, with-d rawing all his money and that of the Rechabitcs, and forged deposit receipts with the name of the manager of the Bank. She was arrested before she could start for England.
