GRAND NATIONAL MEETING.

[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchcrch, August 9. For the Grand National meeting today the morning broke wet, but by noon the sun came out and a lovely day followed. There was a good attendance and a successful meeting, al though the course was heavy. First Hunters' Hurdles. — Gillie, 1 ; Puman, 2 ; Lawrence, 3. Nine others started. Won after a struggle with Puman by a neck. Time, 3min 23sec. Dividends, £16 3s and £60 15s. Maiden Handicap Hurdles. — Barnardo, 1 ; Lady Sockburn, 2. Goodwood, the only other starter, fell at the fence, and Lady Sockburn baulked repeatedly. Barnardo had the race to himself. Time, 4min. 4sec. Dividends, £1 14s 6d and £1 18s. Grand National Steeplechase, Similes. — Gollan's Norton, 12st 81b (Clark), 1 ; Burkes Hombardier, lOst 111 b, 2; Nugent's Amalgam, 9st 7!b, 3. Despised, Booties, Belle, and Nanakia also started. Belle was quickest away, followed by Nanakia, Amalgam,Booties, Despised, and Norton, in the order named, with Bombardier last. Belle continued to lead for two miles, passing the stand the second time. Amalgam, Despised, Nantikia, Booties, Norton, and Bombardier being in the order named. At Cutt's fence Belle and Booties fell. Bombardier soon assumed the lead, and crossed the double at the Kennels ahead of Amalgam, Norton third, Despised some distance away. Bombardier was the first round at the top run, but on coming to the straight Norton joined him, and drawing up past the fence won by six lengths from Bombardier ; Amalgam 12 lengths away third, and Belle fourth. Despised and Nanakia were the only others to finish. Clark's stirrup-leather gave way at the first fence, and he carried it and the iron in his mouth for the rest of the journey. His performance was loudly cheered on his returning to the scale. Time, Bniin. Jsec. Dividend, £2 Ds 6d and £2 7s 6d. Tally-ho Steeplechase, two miles. — Pahau, 1 ; Waverley, 2 ; Lascar, 3. Five others started. Won by a couple of hundred yards from Waverley, with Lascar a quarter of a mile away. Time, 4min. 4Ssec. Dividends, £5 10s and £7 Is. Ladies' Bracelet, two miles. — Leontine, 1 ; Chaos, 2 ; Abel Tasruan, 3. Rags and Mainstay also ran. Leontine won rather easily from Chaos, with Rags two lengths away. Time, 3min. 59] sec. Dividends, £1 14s and £1 16s. Entield Handicap Steeplechase. — Robin, 1 ; Roscius, 2 ; Lord John, 3. Six others started. Very good race, and close finish. Time, 4inin. 24sec. Dividends, £2 16s 6d and £2 3s 6d. Winter Handicap Flat, I^-miles. — Musket, 1 ; Mariner, 2 ; Speculator, 3. Twelve others started. Won after a fine struggle, all the horses being well up. Time, 2min. 24sec. Dividends, £3 13s 6d and £5.
